Here is the rub I have with this whole topic.
1. Do we really want DOD to be responsible for ballots? The current letigic environment has demonstrated that both parties are going to load the system up with lawyers to debate the integral hanging chad issues, so do we really want DOD to be responsible and have electoral lawyers crawling through DOD’s processes or to merely have DOD provide the conduit for information. Be careful what you ask for.
2. Is our obligation satisfied merely by dumping this responsibility on DOD? Each state, county, city, township and fork in the road has the obligation to document each ballot issue to be placed before their voters. This documentation is NOT only the ballot but the detailed information discussing what monies are being obligated, how that money will be obtained and the overall anticipated impact on the community. We are focusing too much on the presidential election and not paying enough attention to our election process overall.
3. It is well documented that the current generation of young people are very disconnected overall with our political processes due to distrust of not only the system itself but of the candidates. What evidence do we have that the drop in military registered voters is truly due to a lack of performance by DOD vs a lack of interest on part of the voters. Are we trying to solve a problem with the wrong solution?
